NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK

The central conservatory, which is brimming with exotic plants, towering palm trees, and beguiling sculptures, is the museum’s crowning achievement, despite the presence of 19th-century artworks and Mediterranean antiquities.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a renowned collection of more than 10,000 treasures, including works of art from Ancient Egypt, sculptures from Greece and Rome, and a sizable number of Etruscan artifacts. A wealth of Golden Age Danish paintings and sculptures, as well as exquisite works by French Impressionist masters like Degas and Renoir, can be found alongside the country’s ancient antiquities. It evolved from the excellent sculpture collection (glyptotek) that Carl Jacobsen, the man behind the New Carlsberg Brewery, gave as a gift. Three architecturally distinct buildings make up the museum as it stands today; the first was constructed in 1897, and the third was added in 1996. As the name suggests, the Winter Garden and its cafĂ© were created to be a relaxing, green space for the long winters. Its focal point is the stirring Water Mother sculpture by Kai Nielsen.
